The defence lawyers yesterday sought exemption of two accused people during submission of their arguments in the Prof Humayun Azad murder case.
They sought exemption of accused Mizanur Rahman alias Minhaz alias Shafiq and Anwar Alam alias Bhagne Shahid.
Defence lawyer Faruque Ahmed told the court on Sunday- the family members of the victim did not say anything about these two accused. Besides, these two accused were not involved the incident, Faruque said.
Other accused people are-Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) members Salehin alias Salahuddin, and Nur Mohammad.
Of the accused, Salehin and Nur Mohammad are on the run, while other two are in the jail.
During the closing arguments, Advocate Md Shaiful Islam, Public Prosecutor in the case, told the court that they were able to prove the charges against the accused and sought capital punishment for them.
Judge Maksuda Parvin of the Fourth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka fixed January 24 for submission of the defence lawyers’ arguments.
Earlier, the court recorded statements of 42 prosecution witnesses, including complainant of the case.
On February 27, 2004, JMB activists stabbed 56-year-old Prof Azad while he was trying to hire a rickshaw to go to his residence from Ekushey Book Fair at Bangla Academy in the capital. After the attack, Azad was treated at the Combined Military Hospital for 26 days.
Then the government sent him to Bangkok for better treatment from where he returned home after 47 days.
A day after the murder attempt, Azad’s brother Manjur Kabir filed an attempt to murder case with Ramna Model Police Station against some unnamed people.
Dr Azad, a Professor of Dhaka University’s Bangla department, died of heart attack. Autopsy report said the heart attack originated from the attempt to murder attack. He died of the heart attack in Munich on August 12, 2004.
The Investigation Officer of the case, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Inspector Kazi Abdul Malek, submitted the charge sheet on November 15, 2007 accusing JMB leaders Anwar, Mizanur and Nur.
