Twenty-six fishermen were detained in a raid on Padma river in Munshiganj’s Louhajang upazila today for catching hilsa illegally.
A mobile court later sentenced each of the 23 fishermen to 15 days of rigorous imprisonment and one fisherman to 10 days of simple imprisonment. Two others were released on bond as they were less than 18 years old.
The sentence was handed down by Mahmud Ashik Kabir, assistant commissioner and executive magistrate of the mobile court.
Md Asaduzzaman Asad, senior upazila fisheries officer, confirmed the information to The Daily Star.
“As part of the brood hilsa conservation campaign, the operation was carried out on Padma river from 4:00am to 3:30pm today,” he said.
“During that time, 30,000 metres of electric net were seized, as were six fishing boats,” he said. “At the end of the operation, the seized nets were burnt and destroyed.”
