Three people have been sent to Dhaka in critical conditions
Five people were shot and injured during a clash between the supporters of two candidates of upcoming Union Parishad polls at Charkewa in Munshiganj Sadar Upazila on Sunday night.

Police said the clash broke out around 7pm in Khaskandi and Choto Mollakandi villages of the union between supporters of the Awami League’s candidate Afsar Uddin Bhuiyan and independent candidate Akhtaruzzaman Jibon.

Crude bombs were exploded and shots were fired during clashes while more than 50 houses were vandalized.

Five supporters of the ruling party candidate Afsar suffered bullet wounds in the clashes. Three of them were sent to Dhaka in critical conditions while two others are being treated at Munshiganj General Hospital.

According to Afsar, a number of people, including his supporters, Sharif, Saiful, Nazmul, Babu Haldar, Monir and Ramzan, were injured in the attack.

However, independent candidate Akhtaruzzaman dismissed the allegations to claimed that Afsar’s supporters attacked his men.

Meanwhile, a farmer, Abdul Haque, 48, died of a heart attack during the clash, police said.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Suman Deb said additional forces have been deployed in the area following the violence.
